What is a Community Eye Clinic?

Community Eye Clinics are walk-in eye clinics held at health centres. The eye doctors come to a health centre near you, so the public can get a specialist eye review without waiting for a referral letter.

This service is unique to Brunei Darussalam. In most other countries, patients first see a general doctor, ask for a referral, and wait for a hospital appointment before they can see an eye specialist. In Brunei, you can walk straight in.

Who can come?

  • Anyone. It does not matter where you live. You can go to any Community Eye Clinic, even if it is not your own health centre.
  • Come if you have an eye problem, such as blurred vision, a red or painful eye, new floaters, or any worry about your eyes.
  • If you have diabetes, glaucoma in the family, or are over 40, ask the doctor how often you should have your eyes checked.

Days and times

Office hours: 7.45 am to 12.15 pm, and 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

Please come in good time before the clinic closes, so there is enough time for triage, a vision check and assessment by the doctor.

  • Rimba Health Centre: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Berakas Health Centre: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday
  • Sengkurong Health Centre: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday
  • Muara Health Centre: Thursday
  • Temburong (PIHM Hospital): first and third Saturday of every month

After hours or an emergency?

  • After office hours, on Fridays and on Sundays: go to a hospital Emergency Department.
  • Any emergency: go to the nearest hospital Emergency Department straight away. For any other medical emergency, call 991 or go to the Emergency Department.

What to bring

  • Your identity card
  • Your glasses or contact lenses
  • All your eye drops, and a list of the medicines you take
  • If your pupils are widened with eye drops, your vision may be blurry for a few hours. Do not drive yourself home: bring someone who can take you.
